CATALOGUE NOTE
The static yet enigmatic photographs of Ilya Rabinovich dealwith issues of identity against the background of socialstructures. The focus of Rabinovich's practice lies on places thatare subjected to radical changes. In 2005 he photographed theinteriors of Hotel Rossiya (Moscow) shortly before its demolition. In this project he finds a connection with his background cultureby investigating how power and authority were/are presented in theformer ussr, and nowadays Russia. Kisheniev – Johannesburg is acollaborative project with Luan Nel (ra 1998-1999) about theirplaces of origin. Although they come from two remote countries, there are certain similarities. Both places have in a sense'changed hands'. Moldova changed from a communist state to what isconsidered a democracy. Johannesburg has/is changing from anapartheid city to a cosmopolitan metropolis. Rabinovich made twoseries of photographs of Kisheniev and Johannesburg respectively.Nel made a series of paintings concentrating on Johannesburg andKisheniev and deals with the idea of memory and the sometimesillusive character of it.
