ZHU QIZHAN 1892-1996 Watermelon, Lotus Roots and Calligraphy The calligraphy above the painting is a five-syllable verse, from a poem by Bai Zhuyi (774-846), one of China´s greatest poets of the Tang dynasty. Reading: When one wanders in the mud / one feels the roots of the lotus with one´s toes. Signed: Bai Zhuyi´s poem, a spring month in 1986, Zhu Qizhan Seal 1: Zhu Qizhan The large five-syllable poetic line is written sligtly to the right and is contrasted diagonally with the small five-syllable title of the painting Reading: White Lotus Roots and Red Watermelons.
