Watermelon, Lotus Roots and Calligraphy
The calligraphy above the painting is a five-syllable verse, from a poem by Bai Zhuyi (774-846), one of China´s greatest poets of the Tang dynasty.
Reading: When one wanders in the mud / one feels the roots of the lotus with one´s toes.
Signed: Bai Zhuyi´s poem, a spring month in 1986, Zhu Qizhan
Seal 1: Zhu Qizhan
The large five-syllable poetic line is written sligtly to the right and is contrasted diagonally with the small five-syllable title of the painting
Reading: White Lotus Roots and Red Watermelons.
Dated: Spring 1886

題識:紅旗飄拂滿滬城, 有女如雲結隊行。 薄海同歡三八節, 幾經奮鬥到光明。 原來封建女權輕, 七出三從更不平。 枷鎖於今都擺脫, 依然還我自由身。 籠鳥奚能作奮飛, 誰云巾幗遜鬚眉。 木蘭殺敵昭修史, 不是男兒是女兒。 一九五一年三月八日上海婦 女界經人民政府組織領導, 政治覺悟大為提高。本年慶 祝三八節遊行參加者達三十 萬人,開婦女界前所未有之 創舉。寫圖誌慶錄諸文藝七 言三首菰易滬。
