Read Condition Report Read Condition Report Register or Log-in to view condition report Saleroom Notice Provenance Judith Charles Gallery, New York Acquired directly from the above by the present owner in 2014 Saudi Arabian artist Abdullah Qandeel is currently expanding the boundaries of Saudi art with his bold use of color and line in abstract canvases. In a 2012 interview with the Saudi Gazette, Qandeel conveyed his pride in Saudi Arabia and his passion for fostering artistic growth in his home country. He referred to Saudi Arabia as “a melting pot that has resulted in a culture that is loving, warm and filled with potential. The Kingdom is blessed by God with its resources and is a canvas of sand waiting to be painted with monumental beauties that will last forever in time and remind future generations of the possibilities of today.” Qandeel indeed creates "monumental beauties" and is able to capture this spirit of new possibilities in his bold canvases; in doing so he hopes to inspire other young Saudi artists. The Race, executed in 2014, is an exciting example of Qandeel’’s continued desire to broaden the horizons of Saudi art. In the present work, the artist uses undaunted primary colors to create an inventive composition. The Race is subtly influenced by the artist’’ s Saudi Arabian artistic heritage, but is also combined with a newer, bold and unapologetic abstraction. As Eve Therond commented in 2013, "Abdullah Qandeel's paintings stand like intense emotional incidents, unleashing his deepest primitive part and emptying the stored emotional energy. His soul travels through deep layers of rough strokes to find yours in this highly intensely personal visual diary."(Exh. Cat., New York, Richard Taittinger Art Salon, Abdullah Qandeel, 2013, n.p.). The Race is a dynamic and commanding burst of fresh emotions, unbridled and unhindered by any outside forces. Since 2011, the artist has experienced international success exhibiting internationally in Jeddah, New York, and Monte Carlo. In 2012, Qandeel was requested by the Saudi Arabian Mission to the UN to exhibit as a solo artist at the Waldorf Astoria, New York in celebration of Saudi Arabia's National Day where one of his paintings was presented by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a gift to the US Ambassador to the UN.

Abdullah Qandeel B.1988 THE ENEMY WITHIN oil on canvas in artist's frame 200.7 by 140.3cm.; 79 by 55 1/4 in. Executed in 2013. Read Condition Report Read Condition Report Register or Log-in to view condition report Saleroom Notice Provenance Private Collection, Geneva Exhibited New York, Trump Soho Hotel, Open Versus Closed, October - November 2013 The painting is a self-portrait…and I'm my own worst enemy." - Abdullah Qandeel "When it comes down to my art my ideas are universal and simple, I just focus on subject matters that are necessary to discuss today and are important for positive social development. I have an opportunity and a moral obligation as an artist to intelligently entice a dialogue, a pure dialogue that cannot be influenced by anyone. I am not worried about ideas; I am focused on finding a beautiful form in order for the ideas to shine" (Abdullah Qandeel in conversation with Jamie Martinez, 'A Couple of Questions for Artist Abdullah Qandeel', Art Fuse Magazine, 16 November 2013, online ed.). Saudi Arabian artist Abdullah Qandeel creates passionate and unapologetic abstract paintings. Through bold use of line and color, Qandeel illustrates the coalescing of Saudi traditional norms and the vastly changing cultural landscape of the Arab world. As provocateur, he invites and instigates dialogue. His canvases decree: "I hereby state that I no longer accept the stereotype and the prison that has been handed to me over generations of time. I invite you to observe, feel and absorb the development of the new Arab culture, the revival of a new generation where investigation replaces revelation." As part of the Open versus Closed series which was exhibited in New York in 2013, The Enemy Within is a rare self-portrait. Qandeel peers out at the viewer with an almost naive curiosity; a young artist in the early stages of his career exploring his artistic talents, questioning his belief system, and acknowledging his own limitations. With a mature and introspective approach, the crown on his head seems to nod to the privilege and responsibility he feels as an artist and as a proponent of cultural change. Since 2011, the artist has exhibited in New York, Monte Carlo and Jeddah gaining critical acclaim and popularity. Today, Qandeel continues to explore his two favorite mediums - oil on canvas and precision drawing, while continuing to develop a singular style that is as dynamic as his personality.
