Haris Purnomo 2008

Oil on Canvas

180 × 200 cm
Haris Purnomo was born 1956 in
Delanggu, Klaten in Central Java. He graduated from the Indonesian
School of Art in 1975 and the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in
1984. A very controversial artist, Purnomo posts the age-old
question on the concept of identity in his works. A member of PIPA,
a group of artists that took a stand against the oppression of
identity in Indonesia during the 1970s and the 1980s, Purnomo made
his name in an exhibition by PIPA in the 1970s. The event exhibited
pieces that mocked and criticized society\’\’\’\’s flaws, highly critical
of the Indonesian government and was reportedly shut down by the
police. Purnomo\’\’\’\’s contribution to the exhibition was an
installation of a wooden bed stuffed with plastic baby dolls, which
probed the viewers to contemplate humanity\’\’\’\’s hopes for the future
generations. Haris Purnomo took a 20 year hiatus from the art
scene, returning with a series of paintings featuring babies with
tattooed bodies. His current works are reminiscent of his famous
installation of the 1970s, showing the same discontentment with the
conflicts, violence and public deception of today\’\’\’\’s society. The
baby in the present lot, Green Baby, represents the innocence and
purity that each child is born with, and the tattoos symbolizes the
dark sides of humanity that each child inherits from the past
generations. Purnomo\’\’\’\’s explanation for his 1970s installation,
\“Each Indonesian child, newly born, carries the burden and debts of
our past deeds\”, still applies for his current works. The featured
baby with tattoos drawn on his body, depicts the pain that
contemporary society is making the newer generations go through.
These tattooed babies now are descriptive of the new alien
generation, created by the proposed wrongdoings of the past
ones.

Both adorable and ominous, the babies in Haris Purnomo's
paintings are employed as symbols that are appealing aesthetically
yet contain a serious concern associated with the artist's complex
feelings about Indonesian society and politics. Realistically
portrayed, the babies have been deliberately presented to emphasise
their vulnerability and sweetness. Tattoos, which are commonly
associated with street culture and mentality, however, lend a
sinister atmosphere to the subject. This relates to the artist's
socio-political criticism of the previous regime and its lack of
success in achieving worthy goals.

By marking the tattoos on the babies, the artist perhaps
questions whether character and fate are passed down from
generation to generation. As Haris once revealed to Aminudin T. H.
Siregar T., "Each Indonesian child, newly born, carries the burden
and debts of our past deeds." However, these babies also represent
the future and signify the artist's hope for a better tomorrow.
This combination of innocuous, happy images and dark, disturbing
undertones presents one of the most exciting, challenging, original
and personal perspectives to emerge on the Indonesian art scene in
recent years.

CATALOGUE NOTE
"...A baby, whoever its parents are, is a new human being, so that we can invest our hopes in children. I am perhaps too pessimistic to expect anything from 'old human beings', but there's something good in thinking that a thief getting caught and sent to jail is indeed important but it is more significant to ensure that children will not become thieves..."
