we are grateful to ron spronk who, based on first hand inspection, confirms the present attribution to provoost and has assisted in the cataloguing of this lot. spronk notes that, based on infra-red reflectography and dendrochronological analysis, the present painting is most probably one of the very earliest works provoost painted in bruges shortly after his arrival there from valenciennes in the mid 1490s (after a brief sojourn in antwerp). he further notes the similarity of the underdrawing of the present painting to that of the
