Description:
Recently cleaned, restored and re-lined so now in good clean condition with a rather shiny varnish, still showing a few minor surface scratches but nothing significant. In its original gilt gesso frame which is highly ornate and in good order, showing some traces of old dirty. Original title label on back of frame along with Christie's stencil mark on stretcher. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Oil on canvas 97 x 73cm (38 x 29in) Estimate: £3,000 - 5,000 Footnote: Plockhorst was born on 2nd March 1825 at Brunswick and became a pupil of Brande at Stuttgart and of Piloty at Munich. In 1859 he received the medal of the Berlin Academy and in 1866 became Professor at the Weimar School of Art, Berlin. His work is represented in numerous museums around the world, including Bautzen, Cologne, Moscow and Melbourne

Attributed to Bernhard Plockhorst (GERMAN, 1825-1907) The Holy Family oil on canvas 37¾ x 28½ in. (96 x 72.4 cm.) Lot Notes We know that there are other versions of this composition by the artist, one of which was used as the template for a stained glass window in the Church of Our lady of Mount Carmel in Wyandotte, Michigan. Plockhorst was a pupil of Piloty and became Professor at the Weimar School of Art, Berlin.
