Description:
Detailed description This watercolor by Ludovic-Rodo Pissarro features an off-centered, loosely rendered, standing female nude covering her mouth with her hand. Behind the woman are strokes of varying shades of green and purple, which accentuate the pink in her skin. Executed in the first half of the twentieth century, this watercolor on paper is stamped with the artist’’’’s initials. The sight measurements are 23 ¼ x 11 3/8 inches. Vertical crease extending the length of paper to immediate right of image; slight surface dirt visible in lower right. Ludovic-Rodo Pissarro (French, 1878-1952) Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro, who was born in Paris in 1878, was one of the Camille Pissarro’’’’s fourth sons. His famous father encouraged him to draw from nature at an early age, and his influence is obviously considerable. Ludovic created in a wide range of different media, including oil, watercolour, gouache, wood engraving, and lithography. As well as his father, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Indépendents for over a forty year period. In 1898, Rodo together with his brother Georges moved to Paris in his first studio in Montmartre, where they both plunged into the nightlife of Paris, compelling subjects for his work. In 1905, together with as Kees Van Dongena and Maurice de Vlaminck, he participated in the first Fauve exhibition at the Salon des Indépendents. He moved to England in 1914, and in 1915 he established the Monarro Group, which was created to exhibit work by contemporary artists inspired by Impressionism. Beside of his achievements as an artist, he is also remembered for his contribution to art history - for twenty years he researched and compiled a catalogue of his father’’’’s paintings.
