The present model is typical of Picault's work in its celebration of idealised and romanticised Medieval characters. Throughout his lifetime Picault created more than 1000 editions which were cast by a dozen of the finest foundries in Paris.

A Patinated, Gilt Bronze and Marble Figure,
Emile Louis Picault (French, 1833-1915),
depicting an Egyptian scribe, the standing figure holding a stylus
and canopic jar, inscribed Picault, raised on a stepped marble
base.
Height of bronze 29 1/2 inches.
Estimate $ 30,000-50,000
Overall good condition without losses. Fairly even, good patina
throughout. Some areas of unevenness to head (see images).
Scribe loose, with glue residue present.
Marble in overall good, complete condition. Some scratches and
minor chips where pegs from bronze fit into holes. Some other minor
chipping to edges through out. Base set with bronze frame,
felted.
