Description:
Pen and brown ink and wash over black chalk
PROVENANCEWith David Jones, Paris; acquired 1998
CATALOGUE NOTE
Piattoli is known for his very charming drawings of genre scenes
and his illustrations of proverbs, but also made many drawings of
battle scenes and mythological subjects. Like this one, they are
animated, multi-figure compositions, energetically drawn with pen
and wash. Ugo Ruggieri has noted that Piattoli's his drawings of
this type were frequently attributed to Sebastiano
Ricci.1
The subject of the present sheet seems to be the death of
Jezebel, as told in II Kings 9, 30-37. Jezebel, a worshipper of
Baal, was the wife of Ahab, King of Israel. When the warrior Jehu
attacked Ahab's capital, she taunted him from a window and he
ordered her to be thrown down to the street, where she was trampled
to death by horses and eaten by dogs.

Drawings, vol. XVI, no. 4 (Winter 1978), pp. 414-18, pls

Description:
Giuseppe Piattoli (Florence, active 1785-1807)

A game of blind man's buff

signed 'Piattoli'

black chalk, pen and brown ink, brown wash

8¼ x 11 5/8 in. (212 x 294 mm.)
Provenance
L. Grassi (L. 1171b); Sotheby's, 13 May 1924, part of lot 105
(£5.10s. with nine other drawings by the same hand).

Purchased from Crook, 28 February 1925.
Literature
H.D. Chapman in 'The Ford Collection - II', The Walpole Society,
LX (1998), p. 170.
Lot Notes
The signature on this drawing forms the basis for the
attribution of drawings of this type to Piattoli. This documentary
evidence led Paul Oppé to reattribute to Piattoli a drawing in Sir
Brinsley Ford's collection which had been previously been given to
Longhi (H.D. Chapman, loc. cit.). Four drawings by Piattoli showing
other parlour games were sold at Sotheby's, London, 15 March 1966,
lots 46-49. See lot 58 in the present sale for more information on
Piattoli.
