Phelan studied with Frederick Rondel, who was also the teacher of Winslow Homer. Sheep became his predominant subject, which he rendered with obsessive attention, creating abstractly composed configurations of variously sized flocks. His work was commended in a
New York Times
review of the National Academy of Design annual of 1882, which stated that in Phelan's
Sheep Drinking
, "the touch is broad and just, with a good sense of modeling." (April 16)

Sheep in a pasture. Oil on cardboard, signed at the lower left,apprx. 10" x 8", framed in an ornate gilt frame overall apprx.18-1/2" x 17".
Charles T. Phelan was born in New York in 1840. Landscape painterand pupil of Frederick Rondel who was best remembered as theteacher of Winslow Homer.
Condition: Mild cracks in the surface, very minor losses. A fewlosses and loose ornaments on the frame, old restorations.

scattered cracquelure, most pronounced at upper center edge and
near left edge.
Repaired tear with 1 1/2'' vertical area of inpainting at upper
left in trees. Also minor spots in foliage at upper left and upper
center. Minor spots along the edges.
