Frame rubbing. Light scattered areas of craquelure. There is an area of inpaint in the lower left corner, approximately 1 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches. There is another touch of inpaint in the upper left corner, approximately 1/2 x 1/2 inch. No further restoration is visible under UV light.

Other Notes: Jane Peterson began her artistic studies with Arthur Dow at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn and Frank DuMond at the Art Students League. In 1907, Peterson left New York to study in abroad with Frank Brangwyn in London and Venice, Andre L'Hote in Paris and in 1909 she went to Madrid to paint along side with Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida. In 1909, while Peterson was with Sorolla, they painted in several places including Granada and San Sebastian, a coastal city in Northern Spain. This oil painting, once titled Venice, is possibly a harbor in Spain.

Condition: overall very good condition; U.V. looks good with only minor touch up along right edge (frame abrasion); no sign of other restoration or losses.

Oil on canvas, 37 5/8 x 27 5/8 in. (95.5 x 70.2 cm), in an Arts & Crafts frame.
Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure.
N.B. The present work likely dates to around 1906, prior to Peterson's studies with Joaquin Sorolla, and exemplifies her early work and progressing style.

Wax lined, retouch to all quadrants but predominately to u.l. quadrant; largest area of retouch to u.l. corner spanning approx. 5 x 3 1/2 in. at extreme height and width, other retouch mostly dabs; restored crescent-shaped tear to u.l. quadrant measuring approx. 2 x 2 in.

Toning (light struck). Residue of tape from an old mounting on all four sides and the two bottom corners. The two top corners and the lower right corner is torn off. There are two pin holes in the lower left corner. Small tear to the paper on the lower left side, approximately 1/4 inch. Another tear the the lower center edge, approximately 1/2 inch vertical.
