PROVENANCE: A noble villa in Lombardy, from which acquired at the end of the19th century by an old Milanese family and thence by descent to thepresent owner Together with Marco Ricci (16761730) and Antonio Marini(16881725), Bartolomeo Pedon can be considered the forerunner ofthe 18th century Venetian landscape tradition. A member of Fragilia , the guild of Venetian painters, from 1716, hespent most of his career in Padua. The contemporary sourcesreported his peculiar character and bohemian lifestyle, which wasmirrored in the choice of fancy subjects, such as night scenes andshipwrecks, often combined with stylistic originality. The presentpainting shows the loose brushstroke rich in contrast and the coolvivid colouring which are typical elements of Pedon's oeuvre .
