William Payne R.W.S. (1760-1830) Views of Plymouth A pair, both signed, one signed, dated 1830 and inscribed verso The Market Place at Plymouth and the old Town Hall as it stood in the year 1790 Both oil on panel Each 28 x 22cm; 11 x 8½in (2) These were painted at the end of Payne's life and are in the colouring of his third phase of watercolours. He is clearly looking back with nostalgia to his early days as an aspiring artist in Plymouth. Little remains of the architecture, so these are a valuable document although done in London from reminiscence.

A Watercolour Landscape Painting with covered wagon and figures, signed lower left, 6¾ in x 8¾ is (17 cm x 22 cm), mounted and re-framed 14½ in x 16¾ in (37 cm x 42 cms). William Payne was the inventor of the colour 'Payne's Grey'; evident in this typical watercolour dating from the 1780's when Payne was employed at the Military Hospital in Portsmouth (information taken from a contemporary note on the original frame)
