Lot 119 EDGAR SAMUEL PAXSON (american 1852-1909) "BLACKFOOT SCOUTS" Signed and dated 'E.S. PAXSON / 1909' bottom right, watercolor on paper laid to board 19 5/8 x 13 in. (49.8 x 33cm) (sight) provenance: McClees Gallery, Ardmore, Pennsylvania. The Pew Estate, Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. Estimate $10,000-15,000 Examined out of frame, we note this work appears to be executed directly on card (paperboard), rather than on paper laid down on board. The actual size of the work, as measured out of the frame is: 20 1/16 x 13 5/16 inches. The outer borders of the work are darker - more brown - than the rest of the surrounding colors, indicative of mount staining on parts of each outer edge. The verso of the work has an affixed 'E.S. PAXSON ARTIST' label, on which the title of the work is inscribed in ink: "Blackfoot Scouts." The verso of this work has some affixed black paper remnants, principally at parts of two outer edges, along with some surface losses and discoloration. None of the imperfections on verso come through to the front of the sheet. At parts of top, right and bottom outer edges are some tacking holes. While this work may or may not have faded a bit over time (e.g. was the sky once a bluer shade??), we detect no evidence of restoration or repairs. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging.
