Indian brave with lance, study for ''Winning His Coup'', pencil on tan paper under glass, 16.25'' H x 15.25'' W,
signed with initials lower right: ESP. Note: According to the letter of authenticity that accompanies the lot, written by William Edgar Paxson Jr., great-grandson of the artist, the present work was "done in preparation for the painting 'Winning His Coup' in 1905. The drawing has been in the Paxson family since its creation''. Letter dated 6 April 1982. Provenance: Estate of the artist, by descent in the family to William Edgar Paxson Jr., Whittier, CA, circa 1982; sale, John Moran Auctioneers, Inc., 12 February 2002, lot 142B; Private Collection, Long Beach, CA, acquired from the above. Condition: Visual: Ripples and some scattered bubbling to the paper intrinsic to the mounting. Four pinholes, two in the upper left, one in the upper right and one in the lower left. The paper toned. Scattered spots of staining in the lower left corner. A few dots of darker stain scattered throughout.
