The achievement of the great Sienese masters who emerged in the shadow of Duccio, Ugolino, the Lorenzetti and Simone Martini reverberated throughout the fourteenth century in Siena. Filtered through the work of, among others, Bartolo di Fredi and Andrea Vanni, their influence determined the course of Paolo di Giovanni Fei, who is first recorded as a painter in 1369. He worked for the authorities of the Cathedral at Siena from 1395 until 1410, but, to judge from his extant oeuvre, may have found the production of small, exquisitely wrought panels for private devotion more congenial - or more conformable with his talents - than large public commissions.
This characteristic panel, which may be of the 1390s, retains its original engaged and richly decorated frame. The iconography of the Madonna del Latte had a wide currency in trecento Italy, but Fei was no mere copyist and this panel is unusually successful in the way the figures sit within the vertical compartment. The Virgin is impassive but the Child is animated, his right foot stretched out so that the toes mark the lower corner of the design, while he pulls back on his left foot with his unengaged left hand. The fleurs-de-lis in the Virgin's crown led Ferdinando Bologna to suggest that the picture may have been ordered for a member of the house of Anjou, rulers of Naples for whom Simone Martini himself had worked over half a century earlier (loc. cit.).
