Raymond Lister states the composition, which lends itself perfectly to Palmer's 'little long' format, was based on studies made during his honeymoon in Italy with Hannah Linnell, in 1837-9, and, therefore, dates it to 1843, the year of its first exhibition, along with a similarly derived work, The Colosseum and Alban Mount, which was no. 56 in the exhibition, and is now in the Ashmolean Museum.
