Lot number:

Other WORKS AT AUCTION
Description:
David Oyens (Dutch, 1842-1902)
Taking a little rest
Add. Notes: signed 'D Oyens' (lower left) oil on panel 32 x 23.5 cm.Notes: Following the advice of his celebrated tutor Kasparus Karssen, Springer travelled extensively through Belgium, France and Germany at an early stage of his career. It was during these trips and his journeys along the Rhine that he found the motives for his cityscapes. The present lot is a view of the Market square of Trier, the oldest city in Germany and arguably one of its most picturesque squares. Founded by the Romans in 16 B.C., it is located on the right bank of the river Mosel and was the capital of the Western Roman Empire. The large building on the right of the composition is the so-called 'Red House' which bears the inscription "Ante Romam Treveris Stetit Annis Mille Trecentis" (Before Rome Trier existed for thirteen hundred years). This is a myth dating from the middle ages but there is evidence to suggest that people did live in the valley of the Mosel 3000 years before Christ. The present work, painted in in 1846 just before Springer turned thirty, has been provided with abundant staffage and is in impressive original condition.
