DESCRIPTION signed in Cyrillic and dated 83 l.r.; further signed, titled anddated on reverse oil on canvas PROVENANCE Acquired directly from the artist CATALOGUE NOTE "All my life, I have been building cultural bridges between Eastand West" Although a journalist by profession, the Silesian born NorbertKuchinke (b.1940) is perhaps best know for his role as the DanishProfessor Hansen in the Classic Russian film, Autumn Marathon(1978). A talented Russian linguist, Kuchinke was passionate aboutRussia, and worked as the Moscow correspondent for Stern, one ofthe first Western magazines to be set up in Russia in the early1970s. Kuchinke is a religious person and deeply affected by thedestruction of churches and religious monuments by the SovietState. It was at this point that he turned his attention toactively supporting the Orthodox church. His dedication to thiscause has earned him a decoration from the State. He is the onlyWesterner to have received this Order.His involvement with contemporary Russian culture led him to meetthe leading artists of the Moscow underground, including LeonidPurygin. Purygin subsequently asked Kuchinke to become godfather tohis daughter, Dunya.
