Description:
'The La Brea Pit'', circa 1923, unsigned, oil on canvas laid to artist's board, 12'' H x 16'' W, est: $1000/1500. Note: Concert pianist, music educator and composer Frances Ulric Cole (1905-1992) was born in New York but early in her career spent time in Hollywood, CA. She received the present work and the following painting as a gift from the artist on the occasion her 18th birthday, September 9, 1923. That year Cole was awarded her first fellowship to the Juilliard School of Music. She remained in the New York area for her career as a music teacher, composer and editor for Time Magazine, and was a founding member of the Society of American Women Composers. The present work bears an inscription on a label affixed verso that reads: Location: Northern side of Wilshire Blvd., N east, Los Angeles. From this continuously bubbling pond of crude oil and vicinity, mastodons, other prehistoric carcasses have been brought forth. / This picture should be in the Los Angeles Historical Museum.
Condition Report:
Visual: Surface dirt and discolored varnish. A surface drip in the upper left. Frame abrasion along the edges and a few abrasions to the extreme canvas edges from framing tacks. The board slightly bowed. Blacklight: No evidence of restoration under blacklight.
