Duncan Morris Oppenheim - The Wonderful Hawkbit
Original 1944
Other WORKS AT AUCTIONDescription:
oil on board, signed and dated along lower left edge, 18 x 12 in., 45.7 x 30.5 cm. Morris Cox is synonymous with the Gogmagog Private Press. The colourful, quirky productions issued from it are among the most original and forward-looking private press books of the second half of the 20th century. In a career that spanned more than seven decades, Cox produced an extensive corpus of paintings, drawings, prints, private press books, poetry, prose, sculpture, and photography. While he is best known for the books issued from his own Gogmagog Press, his work outside of Gogmagog is virtually unknown. He held no exhibitions of his paintings or prints after about 1950; the sole book of his poetry published by a commercial firm (The Whirligig, 1954) went quickly out of print. That said, as an artist Cox had a particular brand of Surrealism that, may have fallen outside the accepted canon of mid-century British art, and though it produced very little commercial benefit to its author at the time, it has been lionised ever since.
