Irfan Önürmen (Turkish, b. 1958) Untitled (from the Gaze series) signed and dated 'Irfan Onurmen 2012' (on the reverse) tulle 78¾ x 51 1/8in. (200 x 130cm.) Executed in 2012 'I reconstruct a traditional mode into a unique artistic language to investigate urban life, every day experience and also to reflect upon chaotic political atmosphere in Turkey. I view panic as a contemporary illness. Bombarded by images, our perception of reality becomes blurred and we feel panic. Our electronic world defines individual existence, where no-one encounters anyone outside of virtual reality.' (Irfan Önürmen in conversation with Nancy Atakan in "Reflections on Chaos", in Canvas magazine, vol.8, no.4, July-August 2012, pp. 68-73.) The works from the Gaze series refer to the area between the outer world and the individual's inner world. It deals with the situation of gazing which is intangible and uncertain. Önürmen captures the nature of anonymous human beings, starting with images which he collects from the digital world, demonstrating their inner landscape by juxtaposing tulle pieces on top of each other. Like a surgeon, he superimposes the lightest material of textiles to create depth as if to repair a wound. With the transparency of the tulle, he also layers it to give the faces another dimension. In a parallel act, the mechanism of adding or removing the tulles allows him to penetrate deeper in the human soul and in his own inner world, like a graphic designer separating the colour plates and preparing an image. The multilayered images create, with every new surface, a different image which leads the viewer to a new reading every time one looks at the work. The angles from which we face Önürmen's large scale faces play a role in seeing a new image, moving from complete abstraction to a clear stare in the eyes of the character. It is an endless game between shadow and light to read a face, to understand a gaze and to search deeper in the human soul. 'When he paints on tulle, Önürmen creates what he calls "Pentulle"- layers of painted tulle hung back to back directly on the wall or "Sculptulle"- which is layers of tulle arranged similarly in a Plexiglas case. Önürmen applies his labour intensive painting process to make the virtual images concrete as he reflects indirectly upon a former time; a period requiring one to prove one's proficiency in a career by writing a book, composing an original piece of music, excelling in a craft or doing something significant to become well-known'. 'The tulles are like whispers spoken by a ghost trying to tell a story about scenes that are taking place between the layers of the tulles used as a metaphor for the various dimensions of our reality.
