Description:
ONIB OLMEDO (The Philippines 1936-1996) Concert dans l'impasse (Concert in the alley) signed 'ONIB OLMEDO' (lower right) inkwash on paper mounted on board 61¾ x 42½ in. (157 x 108 cm.) Painted in 1992 One of The Philippines' foremost expressionist painters, thelate Onib Olmedo has carved out a legacy for himself as an artistwho can claim a portion of a person's soul within his vivid andenduring portraits. Working during a time when Filipino audiencestill preferred gentle landscapes, colourful genre scenes andbeautiful still lifes, Olmedo's modernism-inspired technique andstarkly honest perspective raised many an eyebrow by viewers whofound his works extremely depressing and so overly realistic as tobe shocking. Olmedo was drawn to characters of the street -musicians, prostitutes, and other disenfranchised personalities forwhom he felt extreme compassion and an implicit empathy. The figures produced by Olmedo are distorted, uncomfortably posed, with pronounced, even exaggerated facial appendages. They remind usalternately of Modigliani's mournful muses or Picasso's cubistexperimentations. Yet upon closer inspection, Olmedo's works do notfollow the formal rules of cubism either, choosing to abandonmodernist strictures for a freedom of method which seemed naturaland organic to the artist, and the themes he intended toillustrate. Concert in the Alley is one of two inkwash works which won theartist an honourable mention at the illustrious Cagnes-sur-Merinternational art competition in 1992. It is part of Olmedo's "NewYork Series", depicting a lone individual playing a violin on thefire escape of a New York apartment. The work exemplifies thetension between a passion for beauty and aesthetic culture asopposed to the griminess and harsh reality of urban life. Themotorcycles parked under the balcony elaborate this theme, actingas a metaphor for the broken down city atmosphere, as well asmodern society's obsession with speed. The other award-winning workat Cagnes-sur-Mer, The Apartment, dwells on a similar subject, depicting a two-storey poorly built shanty apartment which appearsto be on the verge of falling down. A man crouched on the upperstorey stares at the viewer with anguished eyes, while hisdownstairs neighbour plucks a plaintive tune on a guitar, his mouthagape as though having forgotten the tune to his song. TheApartment is a bolder, more brutal and discomforting compositionportraying life at the bottom of the social spectrum; whilstConcert in the Alley, with its bricked residential block andrefined violinist, is gentler, more melancholic and reminiscent ofthe trapped strata of working class folk who constantly have tokeep their feet on the ground and noses to the grindstone tomaintain a semblance of civilised life. That the city musician, alone with his haunting tune, has no otheraudience but a host of grounded motorcycles in an alleyway issymptomatic of the world Olmedo perceives. Deeply humanistic, acollective of alienated individuals, yet possessing an unspokenunderstanding that there is still beauty and grace within theharshest and loneliest situations if one can only look hardenough.
