Statement My work is an attempt to enter the mind of the
invertebrate. I want to understand what it feels like to engage in
their behaviors, movements and rituals. So I intensely study
invertebrates: I read about them; I watch videos of their
movements; I observe them in the wild, at zoos and at museums; I
talk to beekeepers and scientists. I contemplate the odd gestures
of bugs and try to bring their language of movement into my
world.
I journey out of the city and into the woods to observe
invertebrate behaviors, choreograph movements based on what I see,
and use this observed insect language to describe my experience and
respond to the environment. In front of the video camera, I create
narratives through movement, and in the editing process I punctuate
these movements with sound. Through drawing, I insert myself into
the invertebrate world as a character, and imagine the
relationships I would have: how I would raise a brood of spider
babies, mate with a slug, or drink honeydew from an aphid's
abdomen. The drawings have a strong visual relationship to the
videos, and reflect on particular performances. However, they also
explore the insect world in a very different language that is
informed by a collision of scientific and storybook
illustration.
My work is concerned with playful anthropomorphization; it is a
meditation on the fantasy that humans and invertebrates have a
shared set of experiences, accessible through rhythms, patterns,
gestures, and environment.
