CATALOGUE NOTEThe artist, son of a silversmith and a pupil of the Italianate
painter Adriaen van Eemont, is otherwise known only as a landscape
painter. This picture is strongly reminiscent of the hunting trompe
l'oeils of the brothers Johannes and Anthony Leemans. Anthony
Leemans appears as a witness to a document in Dordrecht in 1671,
the year before this picture was painted, but since such pictures
were by then fairly well dispersed, and the tradition of trompe
l'oeil painting in Dordrecht established by Samuel van Hoogstraeten
still thrived, it comes as no great surprise that an artist such as
Offermans turned his hand to such a production.
