The Hunt
Add. Notes: signed 'E. Hunten G. Oeder' (lower left) oil on canvas 45¾ x 73 in. (116.2 x 185.4 cm.)Notes: The six paintings which comprise the present lot show examples of daily racing life in and around Newmarket, often depicting known events and featuring known horses. In The High Street the wall to the right of the image is that of Queensberry House, once the base of the notorious 4th Duke of Queensberry, known as Old Q. In The Rowley Mile the horses are seen pulling up in a race in which a horse of the Queen's seems to have beaten one belonging to Mr Nicky Morriss. Devil's Dyke shows the horses passing through the King's Gap on their way to the start of one of the longer races on the Rowley Mile. The horses in front are in the colours (reading left to right) of Lord Howard de Walden, Prince Fahd, Hamdan al Maktoum and Lord Carnarvon. The Limekilns shows the gallop which lies between the Bury and Norwich Roads out of Newmarket, and depicts the horses heading back towards town.
