A painter associated with the Tonalist movement, Dutch-born Ochtman was committed to working from memory. He concentrated on seasonal imagery, expressing mood through color and form. The artist's poetic sensibility is evident in this image in which he depicts a pasture, but departs from the pastoral tradition. A lone figure sets out on a journey to the sea that seems to lead endlessly through a flat and uneventful landscape, while the viewer's ability to enter the work is stopped by a large puddle and the dense leafage of tree standing above it. Dated 1884, the painting was probably inspired by the Schoharie Valley, New York, where Octhman spent that summer. It represents the early phase in his art, relating to such works as

Frame rubbing. Scattered craquelure throughout. There is paint separation in the trees in the upper left quadrant. There is some possible inpainted craquelure in the leaves at the lower register. There is no further restoration visible under UV light.
