View Lot Notes › Pakistani artist Nusra Latif Qureshi studied the complex art of miniature painting at the National College of Arts, Lahore. Gathering imagery from Mughal, Pahari and Rajasthani miniatures, the artist examines traditional motifs through contemporary juxtapositions conceived in vivid colour. While her work showcases the artist's exceptional draftsmanship and a mastery of the miniature form, its content offers post-colonial examinations of feminism, tradition and the manipulation of history through imperialism. Operative Gestures - II (Lot 1562) unifies seemingly unrelated elements into an abstracted yet balanced composition which plays with hierarchies of scale and engages with the rich, visual histories of South Asia.

Description:
NUSRA LATIF QURESHI (B. 1973) A PARTICULAR SUITABLE PLACE - 1 signed and dated 'Nusra Latif Melbourne 2007' (on the reverse) mixed media on illustration board 12 x 16 in. (29.5 x 39.6 cm.) Executed in 2007 Special Notice No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis. Lot Notes Gathering imagery and icons from Mughal, Pahari and Rajasthani miniatures, Qureshi ironically juxtaposes these traditional motifs with symbols of power and dominance, restructuring hierarchy of scale and composition to inject new meanings into the iconography. Qureshi still preserves the laborious traditional methods of preparing the pigments and paintbrushes although she abandoned traditional wasli paper for a coarser illustration board. Fascinated by the role of British colonialism in both destroying the Mughal empire and shaping the prevailing Pakistani culture, her works break down the imagery of power inherent in these systems and recognises it, challenging its telling of history.
