Emil Nolde (1867 - 1956) Lot 132: Emil Nolde (Nolde 1867 - Seebüll 1956). Set of five Postcards. Description: Coloured block prints, 9 x 14 cm, partially sign. E. Hansen (original name of Emil Nolde) a. titled, inscribed, edges min. used. - For the original artwork © Nolde-Stiftung Seebüll. - Painter, graphic artist and sculptor, one of the leading German expressionists. After being trained at the Sauermann sculpting school in Flensburg N. worked in Switzerland and in Munich. Because the local academy refused him he studied at A. Hölzels art school, followed by studies at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1899. Thereafter he lived in Copenhagen and Berlin where he for a short time became member of the artist's group 'Brücke' in 1906/07. He was co-founder of the 'Neue Secession' in Berlin in 1910. In 1926 he began to erect his world famous house and studio in Seebüll. N. was proscribed as 'degenerate' during the Nazi era; he received many honours after 1945. Among others his works were showcased at the Documenta I to III and are today in the most eminent collections all over the world. EMIL NOLDE (1867-1956) Schiffe bei Windstille drypoint, 1907, on white wove paper, signed in pencil, an impression of the extremely rare first state (of two) (Schiefler & Mosel record only two impressions of the first state and approximately 21 of the second, final state), with wide margins, probably the full sheet, the sheet with various skilfully restored small holes, tears and paper losses, mostly at the sheet edges and in the margins, framed Plate 228 x 308 mm., Sheet 558 x 451 mm.

EMIL NOLDE Junge Frau. Aquatint, etching and drypoint printed in dark bluish black, 1905-06. 197x155 mm; 7 7/8x6 1/4 inches, full margins. Second state (of 4). Edition of approximately 10 in this state, from a total edition of approximately 67 in all 4 states combined. Signed and dated "05" in pencil, lower right, and signed by the printer, Otoo Felsing, in pencil, lower left. A brilliant, early and richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce print. We have found only 9 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Schiefler/Mosel 22.
