Nogari, who is mentioned as a member of the Venetian Painter\’\’\’\’s Guild from 1726 onwards, has been traditionally considered a pupil of Antonio Balestra, although Giovanni Battista Piazzetta would seem to be more likely as his teacher. In Nogari\’\’\’\’s earliest known works, the four Heads (before 1736: Stockholm National Museum), which he executed for the patron and collector Count Carl Gustav Tessin, the influence of Rosalba Carriera\’\’\’\’s portraits appears clearly. This influence is also evident in the present painting belonging to Nogari\’\’\’\’s series of decorative heads - not intended to be portraits - which Rosalba Carriera and Pietro Rotari had made into the brand of Venetian painting. The National Gallery of Slovenia preserves a very similar specimen of almost identical format (oil on canvas, 53.7 x 43.5 cm) representing a young girl holding a dove. It is most likely that the aforementioned painting and the present work were created as pendants or that they belonged to a series that possibly depicted virtues and vices.

Description:
Giuseppe Nogari (Venice 1699 – 1766)
A bearded man with oriental headdress,
oil on canvas, 70 x 53 cm, framed,

Certificate: Prof Erich Schleier, Berlin.
Provenance: Private collection, Berlin. P
rof Schleier writes, "This present portrait of a bearded man with an oriental head covering is in my view an authentic work of very high quality by the Venetian painter, Giuseppe Nogari. It belongs to the character heads depicting philosophers and others in the Rembrandt style and half-length genre paintings, for which Nogari was well known. The warm, almost smoky half-light and the very loose painterly manner are evidence of his closeness of style to his supposed teacher, Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and in terms of typology to Pittoni... \“. Schleier compares the painting with the half-length picture of a miser in the Dresdener Galerie. This is part of a series of four pictures, which Count Algarotti commissioned from Nogari in 1743 on behalf of the Saxon Prince Elector. The Dresden paintings have a similar format and show clear parallels with this work, for instance, in the treatment of the hands. There are other series of this kind in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin and in the Swedish National Museum, Stockholm.

We are grateful to Professor FilippoPedrocco for identifying the present pair of paintings as importantworks by Giuseppe Nogari (written comunication January 2011). Thesetwo elegant allegories number among Nogari\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’s most prestigiousworks. The present paintings reveal the artist\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’s familiaritywith the works of Amigoni and those of his teacher,
Balestra,

they also display Piazzetta\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’s influence. In Venice,

Nogari painted comparable allegories for theGerman collector Sigismund Streit and for Marshal Schulenburg.Between 1739 and 1742,

the artist worked in the PalazzoReale in Turin and in the hunting lodge at Stupinigi. After hisreturn to Venice in 1743,
