Description:
Endre Nemes, Oil on Canvas, Smoking Man, 1929 Oil on canvas Austria/Hungary, 1929 Endre Nemes (1909-1985) - Hungarian-Swedish painter, graphic artist and stage designer Signed and dated on the reverse bottom right ‘Endre Nemes 1929’’’’ Dimensions: 75.5 x 60 cm Very good condition Early work of the Hungarian-Swedish artist, executed in a loose, expressionist brushwork; paintings by Nemes fetch up to €80,000 at international auctions The painting presented was created by the Hungarian-Swedish artist Endre Nemes and originated in 1929. In loose brushwork and a mostly brown color palette Nemes presents in this early work the portrait of a smoking man. Unmistakable are the stylistic influences of Russian artist Chaim Soutine, who used to live in France. The elongated, gently curved lines, particularly expressed in the hand as well as the dark, abstract background are reminiscent of the portraits by Soutine. The painting is signed on the reverse and dated ‘Endre Nemes 1929’’’’ . It is overall in very good condition. In the upper right corner small retouching, otherwise of very good impression. The image size is 75.5 x 60 cm, the frame dimensions 93 x 77.5 cm. Endre Nemes (1909-1985) Endre Nemes was born in 1909 in the Hungarian town Pécsvárad. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Prague.
