Lot 97: Endre Nemes (1909-1985), Circus, Oil Painting, 1930s Oil on canvas Probably Prague, 1930s Endre Nemes (1909-1985) – Hungarian-Swedish painter, graphic artist and stage designer Signed ‘Nemes Endre’’’’ Dimensions: 61 x 42 cm Frame: 74 x 56.5 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany (since 1995, bought in Prague) Endre Nemes’’’’ oeuvre is characterized by a certain melancholy; his compositions of the 1930s were clearly influenced by Surrealism, before he later focused on Abstraction Condition: The work is in good condition, consistent with age. The edges show light marks, where the frame has rubbed. The stretcher measures 61 x 42 cm. The frame shows small traces of age and wear and measures 74 x 56.5 cm. Endre Nemes (1909-1985) Endre Nemes was born in the Hungarian town Pécsvárad in 1909. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. In 1927 he spent some time in Vienna, where he began to study philosophy. In 1930 he moved back to Prague. At the beginning of the Second World War, Nemes, who was of Jewish origin, immigrated to Helsinki from where he traveled through Finland and Norway. In 1948 he settled in Sweden, where he became the director of the Valand School of Fine Arts in Gothenburg. Nemes’’’’ paintings stand mainly in the expressionist tradition, whereas he is often regarded as an exponent of Surrealism. (cbo)
