Makinti Napanangka (circa 1930-2011) Untitled [travels of the Kungka Kutjarra (Two Women) to a site on the south side of Lake Mac Donald], 2000 synthetic polymer paint on linen 107.0 x 28.5cm (42 1/8 x 11 1/4in). Footnotes PROVENANCE Papunya Tula Artists, Alice Springs Aboriginal and Pacific Art, Sydney Private collection Mossgreen Auctions, Contemporary Aboriginal Art, Melbourne, 8 April 2008, lot 30 The Collection of Bonita Croft and the Late Gene Zemaitis, Sydney 'Most senior practitioners of Western Desert art led a traditional bush life in their desert homelands until their first contact with white Australians as young adults. Makinti Napanangka's life has followed the same course and, as with most Pintupi people, she returned to live close to her country at Walungurru (Kintore), an Aboriginal community established during the outstation movement, over 500 kilometres west of Mparntwe (Alice Springs). For many years Napanangka was the most senior woman painting with Papunya Tula Artists. As with other Pintupi women, she worked on the collaborative Haasts Bluff/Kintore women's painting project. This series of major paintings, completed in 1994 and exhibited at the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute in Adelaide, marked the beginning of Pintupi women's participation in the Western Desert art movement as independent artists. Until then, women had worked as collaborators on paintings by their husbands and other close male relatives. Napanangka joined Papunya Tula Artists in 1996. Her style owes more to the gesture of hand-painting ochre onto the body for women's ceremonies, than to the meticulous application of dots that characterises men's ceremonial and contemporary art making. 1. 1. Adapted from Hetti Perkins, Tradition today: Indigenous art in Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, 2014 The accompanying Papunya Tula Artists documentation reads: 'This painting depicts designs associated with the travels of the Kungka Kutjarra (Two Women) to a site on the south side of Lake Mac Donald. The two women were digging for the small animal Kuningka (western quoll). These animals usually live in burrows which were dug by other animals such as the burrowing bettong or rabbits and occasionally in hollow logs. The women later continue their travels to the east.'
