Lot 124: Samuel Mützner (1884-1959), Sairteica from Oltenia, 1930s Oil on cardboard Romania, 1930s Samuel Mützner (1884-1959) - Romanian painter Signed ‘S Mützner’’’’ lower right Dimensions: 64 x 49.5 cm Mounted in varnished wooden frame: 72 x 56.5 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany The painting is in good overall condition, showing minor abrasion. The inspection under UV light reveals several small areas of retouching to the figure and major over-paintings to the left margin. The frame comes with slight traces of use. The dimensions are 64 x 49,5 cm, while the frame measures 72 x 56.5 cm. From 1899 to 1900, Samuel Mützner studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest under the guidance of Eugen Voinescu, Vladimir Hegel and George Demetrescu Mirea, and then for three years at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich under Karl Raupp, Anton Azbe and Simon Hollosoy. In 1903, he went to Paris and enrolled at the Académie Julian. In addition, he went to study in Algiers. Between 1908 and 1910, he created pointillist landscapes. He stayed in Tunisia and Japan, Oceania and South America. In 1923, he returned to Romania and focused there on peasant motifs. Today, works of the painter are in the collection of the Folk Art Museum in Constanta, amongst others. (cko)
