Mulvany exhibited at the RHA from 1826 (the inaugural exhibition) until 1844 (bar one year, 1839) showing close to eighty works during this period. Born in Dublin, he was one of the instrumental figures in the founding of the RHA , one of the fourteen original members and appointed Keeper. Mulvany died at his home in Booterstown, Dublin in 1845. The neighbouring Wicklow landscape was a recurring theme in his oeuvre and the mountain in the background of this scene is likely to be the Sugarloaf. For further reading see Strickland, p.156-157.
