Augustus E. Mulready (fl.1863-1905) - 'Wandering Minstrels' two sleeping children holding a whistle and a tambourine in a London park, with other figures nearby, signed and dated 1876, also inscribed verso, oil on canvas, 28" x 36" **The artist was best known for his London Street scenes and works entitled 'Fading Flowers' and the present example, 'Wandering Minstrels' are perhaps two of his most famous examples. He came from a family of artists arriving from Ireland establishing himself as a painter and book illustrator, he himself was born in Kensal Green, he entered the Royal Academy Schools as early as 1861 at the age of 17, and came to the notice of John Callcott Horsley who took him under his patronage, he exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1863- 1880, he was associated with the Cranbrook Colony of artists, his 'Homeless by Night' painting was exhibited at the Atkinson Art Gallery in Southport in 1892, his pictures are social documents often related to problems raised by social activists like Charles Dickens whose books of the times were popular with the Victorian public, the artist was often described as a sentimental social realist. ** With Sotheby's London, Victorian Paintings Auction, 27th June, 2006 the original cost price being, £13,000

Medium: oil on panel Notes: Presented in original frame. Augustus Edwin Mulready was the son of William Mulready Junior (1805-1878, portrait painter and picture restorer) and grandson of the celebrated William Mulready RA (1786–1863) who came to London from Ireland and established himself as a very successful and popular genre painter and book illustrator. A.E. Mulready was influenced by Charles Dickens and his work has been described as that of 'a sentimental social realist'. A feature of his paintings is the inclusion of street posters in the background, the text of which creates additional social and political context for the depicted scene.

Mulready was quite known for his almost literal interpretations of everyday life, which differed from the quite emotional works of the era. A member of the Royal Academy, his exhibited works were shown from 1863-1880.
