The present lot was most likely painted on

Le Durgeon

, a river that runs through the small village of Coulevon, near Vesoul, eastern France. Muenier was born here and spent most of his life living in his father's mansion and painting village scenes and landscapes of the surrounding area. Photography was instrumental in his art, often using a camera to capture scenes and later painting from the images in his studio.

The works can be subdivided intoa smaller group of novels: "Scenes of Private Life", "Scenes ofPolitical Life", Parisian Life", "Provincial Life", "Country Life","Military Life" and so on. The various narratives take place during the Bourbon Restoration(1814-1830) and the following July Monarchy. While there arehundreds of characters in La Comédie humaine , a number ofthem travel from one story to another. This allowed Balzac to fullyexplore their psychological development, creating a remarkabledimensionality to his stories of a type not before attempted. Thecharacter that best represents Balzac's project is Eugene deRastignac, an ambitious but poor nobleman who appears in overfifteen stories. Jealous of high society yet naïve of the price ofreaching its echelons, Eugene will do anything to improve hissocial standing. Rastignac and all of Balzac's characters, from thelowest urchin to the wealthiest aristocrat are unified by theiroften single-minded quest to appease base urges and often selfishneeds despite the cost to themselves and to those aroundthem. Given the dramatic and complex nature of Balzac's stories, it islittle surprise that an ensemble of celebrated and emerging namesof late 19th Century art would be chosen to illustrate an expansiveedition of Katherine Prescott Wormeley's translation of LaComédie humaine , published in the United States in severaleditions by Boston publishers Roberts Brothers and Little, Brownthough the late 1890s (an 1899 edition honored the centenary ofBalzac's birth). Such projects were common in publishing in the19th Century, but the Wormeley edition is notable for its roster ofartists who illustrated each volume's frontispieces andparticularly intriguing moments in each story. The annotations onthe drawings are in French; so it is likely that a French agentfirst commissioned the project prior to the drawings' engraving andsubsequent printing in the English translation. The range of styles, compositional technique and pictorial choicesin this group of illustrations easily conveys the editions appealto American audiences eager for beautifully bound,fully-illustrated editions of great literature. The American readerwould probably not have recognized each artist's name; indeed theset might only have served as expensive library decoration for mostbuyers. Perhaps more important than a good read was the opportunityto own a luxuriously appointed edition of La Comédiehumaine . Collectors showed they were à la mode ; part ofthe vogue for anything French that swept the East Coast of Americain the late 19th Century.
