It is a typical flower still life with a summer bouquet in a blue-white earthenware vase, as the artist has created it multiple times in the 1940s to 1960s. The artist renders the summer flower bouquet in front of a dark background in theatrical lightening with a loose hand, in pastose swift brush strokes. The painting is signed upper left ‘Mudroch’’’’. The painting is in very good condition with slight framing marks. The frame displays larger bumps and chips. The stretcher measures 59.7 x 46.1 cm and the overall dimensions, including the frame, are 78 x 64.5 cm. Ján Mudroch (1909-1968) Ján Mudroch was the first principal of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. He was a co-founder of a group that published surrealist magazines and anthologies. In his works, he mainly focused on still life paintings and often made use of metaphors and symbols. During the war period he created works that strongly expressed the misery. He turned towards Poetic Realism after the Second World War. He was awarded the title of ‘Artist of Outstanding Merit’’’’ of Slovakia in 1963 and posthumously the title of ‘National Artist’’’’ of Slovakia in 1968.
