CATALOGUE NOTE
This powerful painting is the first self-portrait to be paintedby Ahmad Morshedloo, and is a glimpse into his world, anexistentialist work dealing with his actions, thoughts andemotions. The artist dominates the painting, fulfilling the classic roleof the middle-eastern man, the principal player in the game of hislife, governing the woman painted three times below him. Yetdespite this pyramidal composition and the clear dominance of themasculine figure, there is a sense of anxiety in Morshedloodepicted with one eye blacked out, unseeing, as though blinded. This is in direct contrast to the woman whose face is lovinglyrendered and finely modelled, with her frank and challenging gaze.In the upper third of the canvas, framing Morshedloo's head arestrange vignettes painted against a yellow ground. To the artist, the colour yellow is the colour of uncertainty, and these sketchesreference the sum of his past: his parent's influence, hisschooling and his experiences as a child, moments that formed hisopinion and his sense of self, moments that seem now to be leadinghim to a sense of self-doubt. The narrative is mysterious, but captivating, in this rareself-portrait by one of Iran's most talented living artists.

Lot Notes
Proinently featured in Saatchi's recent exhibition Unveilved:
New Art from the Middle East, Ahmad Morshedloo is one of Iran's
strongest realist painters. His works, featuring the oridinary
people around him, explore the alienation between the residents of
his native Tehran, especially that between the sexes. In this,
among the most powerful of his works on paper, Morshedloo
obsessively studies a mulitude of female faces. There is no
uniformity- the women are from all walks of life, some conservative
than others. The one thing they share in common is their blank gaze
into the near distance.
