Hyppolyte François Moreau (French, 1832-1927): A bronze figure of an Oriental beauty entitled 'Captive'
seated on a ledge above a tree trunk, her drapery falling in crumpled folds, and her slippers removed revealing her bare feet, signed Hip Moreau to the left side of the trunk, and stamped SOCIÉTÉ DES BRONZES DE PARIS, rich brown patination, mounted on a waisted socle with a plaque inscribed CAPTIVE SALON DES BEAUX-ARTS,
Footnote:
The Société des Bronzes de Paris cast this model in three sizes, the present lot being an example of the smallest size.

CATALOGUE NOTE
Hippolyte was the brother of sculptors Mathurin and Auguste (seelots 65 and 114). He exhibited his first work at the Salon in 1859and focused throughout his long career on charming allegoricalfigures depicting young women and children.
