FRANCESCO MONTI

(Bologna 1685 - Brescia 1768)

THE MEETING OF ESAU AND JACOB

Oil on canvas, cm. 87 x 124

PROVENANCE

Illustrious Roman family

Painter formed initially close to Sigismondo Caula, then enter the school of Govan Gioseffo Dal Sole, thus affirming a style marked by influences from Veneto and matrix classicist.

In his mature works Bolognese and Venetian elements will become more pronounced through an artistic characteristics of various artists ranging from Crespi, to Donato Creti, to Ricci and Antonio Balestra.

Its production quite varied, commissioned by both individuals from the church, created masterpieces such as the painting \`\`\`\`Achilles dragging Hector\`\`\`\`s body\`\`\`\` kept in the Palazzo Durazzo Pallavicini and works in collaboration with well-known landscape painters such as Nunzio Ferrajoli and Mirandolese.

The work in question depicting \`\`\`\`The meeting of Jacob and Esau\`\`\`\` can be inserted between the production of the most important mountains, namely the components of maturity where the Venetian and Bolognese are now merged perfectly. The executive fluency, the prevalence of pictorialism, deep openings in the landscape, the illustration of the characters and references to Crespi and Donato Creti, place this painting in relation both to the painting \`\`\`\`The Judgement of Paris\`\`\`\`, location unknown, and the above cited \`\`\`\`Achilles and Hector\`\`\`\`

CONDITION OF PAINTING

Relining in twentieth century. Restore points on the branches of the trees in the upper left, between the figures in the lower left and the fronds laid on the embankment in the center. The painting is in good condition

FRAME

English wooden frame in gray lacquer and gold, decorated with floral sprays and leafy flowered, the eighteenth century
