Pierre Etienne Monnot BUST OF A GENTLEMAN IN A WIG signed and dated: P. C. Monnot Bisontimus FC Roma 1697[9] white marble 76cm., 30in. 1657 - 1733 Executed in 1697 or 1699. Provenance Drouot, Paris, 15 December 1997,lot 145 Catalogue Note Born and educated in France, Pierre-Etienne Monnot moved to Rome around 1687, establishinga successful career as a sculptor in the Eternal City. Foremost among his distinguished international clientele was Karl, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel(1654-1730), who entrusted him withthe lavish decoration of the Marmorbad in Kassel. Another important patron of the sculptor was the Englishman John Cecil, 5th Earl of Exeter(circa 1648-1700), for whom Monnot produced an elaborate tomb. Monnot was clearly valued by his patrons not only for his architectural and decorative designs, but for his considerable talent in portraiture; bothHesse-Kassel and Exetercommissioned busts from the sculptor. While its flamboyantly coiffed sitterhas not been identified, the present bust illustrates Monnot's skill as a carver, as well as his flair as a portraitist. RELATED LITERATURE S. Description:
Circle of Pierre-Étienne Monnot (1657-1733) Italian, Rome, early 18th century SAINT PAUL painted terracotta height 17 3/8 in.;44.13 cm. Catalogue Note Pierre-Étienne Monnot (1657-1733) had his early training in France, before moving to Rome in around 1687. He was also among the select group of sculptorscommissionedto carveapostles of heroic scale for Borromini's niches in the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano. Monnot's monumental figure of St. Paul, for which no bozzetto is known, wascompleted in 1711. The sculptor of the present statuette had an intimate knowledge of Monnot's Saint Paul, in the position ofthis figure's limbs and the particular folds in the drapery.Furthermore, the author was familiar with the work ofother important sculptor's in Rome, including that of Alessandro Algardi, whose specific facial types clearlyinformed the finehead and beard of the present figure.
