Description:
“Peder Bredals skibe ises ud af Nyborg Fjord\”. A channel is made for Peder Bredal's ships through the ice on Nyborg Fjord. Signed and dated Chr. Mølsted 1891. Oil on canvas. 90×150 cm. Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1891 No. 358, here with the description (in Danish): \“After the Swedish King Charles X Gustav had occupied Nyborg in February of 1658, he attempted to conquer four frozen ships on the nearby fjord, but Bredal defended himself valiantly. He ordered the ships iced up and had water poured over them, which froze along the sides of the ships – making a boarding impossible.\” Exhibited: Foreningen for National Kunst, Charlottenborg, \“Christian Mølsted\”, 1962 no. 12. The historical background for the motif: In the winter between 1657 and 1658 the Danish waters were frozen solid, and in January 1658 the Swedish King Karl X Gustav led his army over the frozen Lillebælt (Little Belt) and conquered the island of Fyn (Funen), including Nyborg Castle. Outside the fortress lay several Danish naval ships under the command of Peter Bredal. \“With Nyborg as a base, Peter Bredal\’s assignment had been to ensure that the supply lines between Fyn and Sjælland were maintained during the winter. Now the ships lay hopelessly frozen in the ice. The Swedes were very interested in conquering the Danish ships, thereby reducing the size of the Danish fleet, but they did not succeed in this. Peter Bredal cut an ice-free channel around the ships and poured water over the sides of the ships, which quickly froze to ice. Firstly, this reinforced the ships' sides against the bullets of the Swedes, and secondly, the ice made it impossible to board the ships. The Swedes committed quite a number of troops to this attack and built entrenchments on the ice around the ships. However, Bredal and his crew defended themselves so hardily that the Swedes after four days had to abandon the idea of capturing the Danish ships. During the attack, the Danish crew had continuously tried to cut their way out through the ice, and finally, they succeeded in this endeavour. Peter Bredal and his crew had achieved one of the most impressive feats in all of Danish naval warfare history." (From Hans Christian Bjerg and Ole L. Frantzen: \”Danmark i krig\” (Denmark at War), 2005). In the present painting, Bredal's people are in the middle of cutting loose the iced-up ships. Christian Mølsted (b. Dragør 1862, d. s.p. 1930)
