Notes: Robert Mols began his artistic education at the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and later in 1866 he moved to Paris where he studied under Jean François Millet and Jules Dupré. Mols, an excellent draughtsman and a brilliant colorist often delighted in rendering the marvellous effects of wide horizon-lines and the changing moods of the sea. He was awarded the Cross of the Order of Léopold in 1879 and in 1900 he was made a chevalier de la Légion d'honneur.

Mold visited Constantiople for only a a short period, and a handful of paintings depicting this city exist. In this painting Mols has chosen a famous mosque located right on the Golden Horn as his subject matter. For its prominent location near the main harbor of Eminönü in Constantinople, Yeni Cami is one of the first monuments that a visitor would see when arriving in this city by boat. This mosque is also widely considered the last example of the grand Ottoman mosques. Construction of the mosque begun in 1597 under Murat III and the building was finished under Mehmet IV in 1663.
