Very good condition
Multi-figure composition with expressive colors and a reduced design vocabulary; Rudolf Möller\’\’\’\’s oeuvre is associated with the expressive realism
Surrounded by femininity: the artist\’\’\’\’s wife (singer Hertha Falck, 1895-1940) as double portrait, behind and in front mother and daughter figures. In the middle en face, in a red dress, \‘Das Kind\’\’\’\’, son Günther (1917-1941), who was killed in Kiev at the age of twenty-four. The central backgrounds is the short way to the sea with trees and vanishing red boat.
Due to National Socialism and war a number of artists, which were born between the late 19th century and 1905 and had absolved their training in the late 1920s, fell into oblivion, because their artistic talents were partly suppressed, not supported and lived out. The works of these painters were often declared as 'degenerate' and it was also difficult for them to get famous during the post-war period. Representatives of expressive realism, as Rudolf Möller, belong to this lost generation, which only attracted public attention in the 1980s. Expressive realism relied on the formal and coloristic renewal of expressionist art and used color not only as means of expression, but also as means of creating space and shapes.
The work is in very good condition with minor signs of age and wear. The canvas measures 83 x 96.5 cm, the size of the frame is 92 x 104.5 cm.
The artist was born on the 12th of February, 1881 in Thuringia and studied as pupil of Lovis Corinth at the Royal Art School in Berlin from 1905-07. From 1916 onwards Möller was art teacher at a grammar school in Berlin, later he became senior teacher for painting and art literature. From 1919-31 he was member of the November Group and in the course of this took part in numerous exhibitions. During National Socialism his paintings were considered as \‘entartete Kunst\’\’\’\’ (degenerated art) and in 1943 he was released from teaching. In 1945 he moved to Lörrach, where he spent the rest of his life. Möller\’\’\’\’s works can be seen today for example at the Kunsthalle Würth in Schwäbisch Hall. (nlu)
