A notarized photo certificate of authenticity from AlanRich Galleries along a signed statement from Moldovan giving AlanRich Galleries authority as an expert on his work, dated October27, 1965, is being sold with this painting.
Sacha Moldovan was born into a Jewish family in Kishinev, Moldovain 1901. Emigrating to the United States around 1915,Moldovan lived with his family on the Lower East Side of Manhattan,helping to support his family by working numerous jobs, whilevisiting museums and studying art at nights. After studying art atCooper Union and the National Academy of Design in New York, heleft in 1922-23 for Paris, where he met a fellow Jewish artist andémigré from Russia with whom he would maintain a life-longfriendship, Chaim Soutine. Moldovan lived and worked in Parisfor numerous years, where he developed his trademark style of thickoutlines and masterful impasto painting. He exhibited widelyat the Salons and various galleries in Paris before World War II,returning to the United States before the war and continuing anactive and successful career as a painter.
