Lot 380 Description

Tanya Moiseiwitsch (British, 1914-2003)
A costume design for Sir John Falstaff in scene 12 of Henry IV, part I, played by Anthony Quayle, titled and inscribed 'For Tony, with love Tanya 1951-1952', watercolour and pen, 17 1/4" x 10 3/4"

Tanya Moiseiwitsch (1914-2003) became one of the leading theatre designers of the 1940s and 1950s and a pioneer of her age, which included designing the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield and the National Theatre on the South Bank. She was one of only a handful of women to work at an international level in costume and set design.
She was most closely associated with the plays of Shakespeare. Like her theatre designs, her set designs were both elegant and direct. She generally designed the costumes too, which gave a visual unity to the whole productions.
In 1949, Tanya Moiseiwitsch began a long association with the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Stratford-on-Avon, where she made her debut with a production of Henry VIII. She became close friends with both Dorothy Hyson and Anthony Quayle.
Tanya Moiseiwitsch was appointed CBE in 1976.
