catalogue note although stylistically related to the figures of the prophets and that of st. louis by cobaert in s.luigi dei francesi in rome, this unusual gilt bronze figure with its tortured expression and flying drapery can be closely compared to both marble and bronze sculpture by francesco mochi. although tuscan by birth, mochi worked much of his life in rome and is one of the few seventeenth century sculptors who was also an expert bronze founder. note in particular the flowing cloak on the equestrian figures of alessandro farnese in the piazza cavalli, piacenza and that of carlo barberini in the barberini collection in rome and in particular the marble figure of st. veronica in st.peter's in rome. a similar and complimentary gilt-bronze figure was sold in these rooms, 5 july 2000 as lot 38. related literature j. montagu, gold, silver and bronze, metal sculpture of the roman baroque, london 1996, figs.63-65; j. montagu, 'a model by francesco mocchi for the saint veronica' in burlington, april 1982, p.434-438; francesco mochi 1580-1654, exh.cat., florence, 1981
