An amusing ivory netsuke of Daruma By Ohara Mitsuhiro (1810-1875) Osaka, 19th century Signed Mitsuhiro with a kao. 3.8cm (1½n) high. 象牙彫根付 達磨 銘「光廣 (花押)」 19世紀 Published: Katchen, N7, vol.1, p.191, no.K778. The upper part of the patriarch's face staring out from the folds of a sack or his voluminous robe, carved in a simplifed manner in lightly stained ivory, the pupils inlaid. Mitsuhiro's notebook, TTB, lists one netsuke which may be the notes for this example. No.24 describes 'Daruma. His whole body is curled up, stuffed into a bag and only his face is showing. No need to carve sleeves or the lower body. Daruma's face is protruding from the opening of the bag'.

An ivory netsuke of a puppy By Ohara Mitsuhiro (1810-1875), Osaka, 19th century Signed in an oval reserve Mitsuhiro. 4.2cm (1 5/8in) wide. 象牙彫根付 仔犬に蜻蛉 銘「光廣」 19世紀 Provenance: A Kroch collection. Published: Katchen, N7, vol.1, p.123, no.K61. Seated, its head lowered and facing ahead, a large dragonfly having alighted on its back, one leg forming the himotoshi, the slightly worn ivory typically stained and the pupils inlaid. The design is listed in Ohara Mitsuhiro, TTB, no.16. A very similar example is illustrated in Lazarnick, NIA, vol.1, p.777.

Published: Katchen, N7, vol.1, p.163, no.K473. Resting with wings spread on a roof tile, the end of which is carved in relief with a cross, the bat stained black and probably added at a later date. A netsuke of a roof-tile with a frog by Mitsuhiro is illustrated in Davey, MTH, p.45, no.97.

Published: Katchen, N7, vol.1, p.165, no.K558. The severed head resting in a shallow bowl of slightly irregular conical form, the stained and well-toned ivory slightly worn and the one visible pupil inlaid. The design is listed in Ohara Mitsuhiro, TTB, no.93. Compare with another piece with similar positioning of the himotoshi and signature with a kao in Lazarnick, NIA, p.1322.

An ivory netsuke of a crane After Ohara Mitsuhiro, Osaka, late 19th century Inscribed Mitsuhiro. 4.2cm (1 5/8in) wide. 象牙彫根付 鶴 銘「光廣」 19世紀後期 Provenance: Andrew Somlyo collection. Published: Katchen, N7, vol.1, p.161, no.K484. Seated, its head turned back to the left and one leg resting on a large egg at its side, the ivory slightly worn and the eyes inlaid in amber with dark pupils. There are a number of netsuke of cranes bearing the name Mitsuhiro which appear not to be from the hand of the famous Osaka master Ohara Mitsuhiro and some of these are said to be by Ueda Kohosai, an artist better known for his ivory okimono.
