Minotaur Signed, dated 1875 and numbered 842 Watercolour heightened with scratching out 14.5 x 22 cm; 5.75 x 8.5 in Provenance: W. R. Deighton, London Bonhams, 15h August 1991, Lot 379 Collection of a Retired Master Mariner Woolley & Wallis, Salisbury, 5th June 2013, Lot 271 From the collection of Sir Jeremy Lever KCMG, QC, MA, FRSA HMS Minotaur (1863), ordered as Elephant but renamed Minotaur before being launched in 1863, was the lead ship of the Minotaur class of ironclad battleships. She was renamed Boscawen II in 1904, Ganges in 1906 and Ganges II in 1908, and broken up in 1922.

Framed; Lower left signed and dated WF Mitchell 1885-1413?; Verso: label Torpedo Boat Builders\ Australian Navy; Lower right inscribed and dated A. Le Prevost\ Havre\ 1864, lower center US Steam Gun Boat "Iroquois" Commander Rogers; Verso: Antique watercolor "US Steam Gun-Boat 'Iroquois' Commander Rogers",\ A fine and delicate scene, very peaceful with ship reflected on calm water.\ Seven sails drying, American flag on mizzen gaff, 3 masts, clipper bow,\ black hull & ship funnel. Two tiny gigs with canvas sun shades nearby,\ one with sweeps. Square-rigger in background. Signed lower right "A.\ Le Prevost Havre 1864". One-half inch gold ropelike frame, overall 13"x11"\ This second-class screw sloop had an interesting civil war career & one\ of active (though antiquated) service into the 1880's, described in "The\ Navy" by Fletcher Pratt.\ Purchased from Samuel L.
