ARR JOHN MACLAUCHLAN MILNE, RSA (British 1885-1957), Corrie Harbour, Isle of Arran, oil on canvas, signed to lower right, 51cm x 61cm. See illustration Provenance: Property of a gentleman, purchased in 1960 from the Ian MacNicol Gallery, Buchanan Street, Glasgow Maclauchlan Milne spent time in France between the years 1919-1932 after serving on the Western Front. During this time his work was influenced by the modern French artists, in particular Cezanne, and by his fellow Scottish Colourists Peploe, Cadell and Duncan Grant. With the advent of the Second World War, he returned to Scotland and took up residence at High Corrie on the Isle of Arran. He spent his days painting the island, the white washed cottages and the jetty below the village. Maclauchlan Milne died in Arran in 1957

PROVENANCE: With the Fine Art Society, London, November 1970, where purchased by the present owner Stylistically this work is consistent with Milne's 1920s French oils. The expressive brushwork, hatching technique and strong design component are original and expressive and anticipate the work of Anne Redpath. It is thought this work may depict Lavardin.
