Description:
PIERRE MILAN (after Rosso Fiorentino) The Three Fates. Engraving, circa 1530s. 242x165 mm; 9 1/4x6 1/2 inches. Small crowned coat-of-arms with interlaced letters JM watermark (similar to Briquet 9494-9498, which dates from circa 1522-48). Trimmed on or just inside the plate plate. A very good impression of this extremely scarce engraving. Formerly attributed to René Boyvin (1525–1598), this engraving is now considered to be the work of Milan (active circa 1540s-50s); both artists were active with the decoration of Fountainebleau during the first half of the 1500s. Robert-Dumesnil 31 (as Boyvin).

Description:
FRENCH, BURGUNDIAN, CIRCA 1500 (born circa 1500-died circa 1557) - A STONE GROUP OF A BISHOP SAINT, POSSIBLY ST. BLAISE -
Mis: 75cm., 29½in.
a kneeling figure at his feet in prayer, polychrome refreshed

CATALOGUE NOTE
With his open book and his gaze fixed straight ahead the saint points his right hand down at the kneeling figure of a knight, possibly the donor figure, at his feet. The treatment of the drapery with soft rounded folds, the intricate decoration on the mitre and the vestments and the details on the armour, with the distinctive poleyn worn by the donor figure points to a date early in the 16th century between 1500 and 1520. Compare with sculpture emanating from Picardie as illustrated by P.Beguerie de Paepe. RELATED LITERATURE P.Beguerie de Paepe, La Sculpture Picarde a Abbeville vers 1500, Tournai 2001, cat. 20-26
